Shu Brocade is one of the most important cultural heritages and well-known traditional craftworks of China, and is the leading one amongst the Famous Four Chinese Brocades, i.e. Song Brocade, Yun Brocade, Zhuang Brocade, and Shu Brocade. Early in 1908, Shu Brocade received a dolden award on Panama World's Fair. In 1917, Shu Brocade received special international award on Southeast Asia Exhibition. In 1937, Shu Brocade received Oriental Beauty Aword on New York World's Fair.
The history of sericicuiture and silk handcraft in China can be traced back to the ancientry of Sichuan, which is the cradle of Chinese silk. In Warring States Period, Shu Brocade had become important merchandise for export, for which a famous trade route was blazed from Chengdu to the Middle East via Yunnan, Burma, India, Pakistan, which is known now as the Southern Silk Road.
Han Dynasty, Sichuan silk cloth had become so popular that all almost everyone in the country had a suit made of that and the central gavernment appointed a special official in the title of "Brocade Officer" in Chengdu to supervise the industry, that's why Chengdu has another name called "The City of Brocade Officer".
Tang Dynasty witnessed the most prosperous period of silk industry in China. Shu Brocade of this time represented the top most level of ancient silk handcraft of China. Orchid Pavilion Prelude, a peice of brocade with calligraphic works, was presented to the emperor as a tribute and treasured up in the royal palace.
In Song Dynasty, a royal brocade workshop was set up in Chengdu, and in Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, brocade girdle was presentde to distinguished foreign guests as royal souvenir.
Recently, new achievements have been made by the newly established Shu Brocade Academy on the application of morden techniques in the traditional handcrafts . Their products is featured for classic elegance in color and concinnity in quality. It is sure that another prosperous period for Shu Brocade is coming soon.
