Sichuan Lacqare ware

Lacquer Ware Natural lacquer is a special product of China. Plain lacquer is transparent; colored lacquer requires the addition of gold, silver, red, or green pigment. The production of exquisite lacquer ware, which reached its maturity during the Warring States Period (475B.C.-221B.C.) and the Qin and Han dynasties (221B.C.-220A.D.), involves a complex and intensive process of coating, polishing, carving, painting and inlaying. Today's lacquer ware is mainly produced in Sichuan, Beijing, Fuzhou and Yangzhou. The lacquer ware of Fujian is simple in composition, bright in color, and possesses a luminous quality. Beijing lacquer ware is more sculpturally oriented; a single piece may demand 100 layers of coating and polishing and usually takes two or three years to complete.

The first piece of Lacqare ware in Sichuan wae excavated in Xindu county (to the north of Chengdu). In history, many of the lacquerware articles excavated from the Han Tomb at Mawangdui in Changsha (Hunan province) bears the words“ Made in Chengdu”.

In recent years, Chengdu lacquer ware has become widely known for the exquisite and unique craft known as “filling carved designs with different colors”. Chengdu lacquer ware are often selected for exhibits abroad and gifts for distinguished persons.

The Chengdu Lacquer ware Art Factory is a key enterprise in the field of Chinese arts and crafts. Its major products include: screens, sets of boxes, reproductions unearthed lacquer ware articles , lacquer paitings and so on.

But in present modern days, it has suffered the same destiny as the Shu embroidery.
