Tibet is a place lack of rainfalls, and the rainfall centres in summer time, mainly in July, August and early September,
during this period, the rainfall accounts for 90% of the year's total.
In summer time, the rainfall will cause plent of troubles to the transportation in Tibet. Mountain slides, road slides and flooding are everywhere, this makes the roads worse for jeeps and buses to get through.
When there is no rains, the dust on roads will almost suffocate travellers in jeeps or buses without airconditioners while they are travelling in high speed.
In Tibet, most of the roads are not paved, except in big cities and towns......
Ways of transportation
By road:
In Tibet, till now there is no railway linking to other parts of China, but now a railway is under construction, it starts from Golmud, Qinghai province to Lhasa, Tibet. (Golmud is about 1160km to the north of Lhasa city, it is located on the vast flat desert in the west of Qinghai; Lhasa is the capital of Tibet autonomous region), this railway is said to be finished in 2007. At that time, tourists can take train tour into Tibet.
The transportation to Tibet is mainly by road, there are 11 road routes linking the outside world with Tibet.
(1): Chengdu to Lhasa along sichuan tibet highway; there are 4 choices
(2): Xining to Lhasa along Qinghai-Tibet road, there are 3 choices
(3): Kunming to Lhasa (from Yunnan to Tibet), there are 2 choices
(4): Kashgar to Lhasa (along Xinjian - tibet road), there is 1 choice
(5): Kathmandu to Lhasa )along China-Nepal freindship highway), there is 1 chioce
By air:
There are two airports in Tibet, one is at Gongghar county, named Gongghar airport, 100km drive from this airport to Lhasa city; the other is at Chamdo, named Bangdha airport, about 85km from this airport to Chamdo city.
Now, you can take plane and fly to Lhasa from such cities as Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Kunming, Xi'an, Zhongdian, Lanzhou, Xining and Chongqing

By train:
after the offical operation from July 1st, 2007, Tibet rail system has been smoothly running for 375 days.
