Holy lake ManasarovarThere are countless lakes on this highland, but only Manasarovar is the most holiest in the heart of pilgrims. Manasarovar is famous in Asia, also in the world. Its elevation is 4,588m above sea level, with a water area of 412 square kelometres. The girth of it is about 84km, it will take common people 3 - 5 days to circulate the holy mountain. This lake is also the fresh water lake with the highest altitude. Trekking around this lake (anti - clockwise), there are a lot monasteries: Nangla, Jiwu, Gochu, Chugu, Serelong and Benri monasteries, among theses, only Benri monastery is Bon religion, others all belong to Gagyu sect. In legends, there are four “gates” around the lake, it was said that to bathe inside will have one blessed by God, and can get rid of one's sins one had ccommited. 4 famous rivers in the world stem from here, which are named in Tibetan language after the shape of the locations where the 4 rivers originate: Lion river, Elephant river, Horse river, and Peacock river. In the lower reach, they are called (same orderlist) India river, Sutrage river, Hindu river and Purama Putra river. Trekking arrangements around Holy lake: Manasarovar Day01 Jiwu monastey -- Hor village 6 -- 8 hours' trekking it is the best location to take photes of Mt. Namonani (to the south of Hor) Camping Day02 Hor village -- Serelong monastery 4 -- 5.5hours' trekking, on the way, watch out of the mushland everywhere. Serelong was thought to be one of the 8 sacred monasteries.Camping Day03 Serelong -- Chugu monastery 6 -- 8 hours' walk. Chugu monastery is the biggest one around the lake. No better place is for taking pictures of Mt. Kalashi and Holy Manasarovar. camping. Day04 Chugu monastery -- Jiwu monastery. 9 -- 10 hours' walk. From the position of Chugu monastery, you can view the Gochu monastery in the far. On the hill of Gochu monastery, it is another nice location for Manasarovar.
