Mogao grottos, Dunhuang, gansu provinceMogao grottos is one of the 4 most well known grottos in China, the other three are Yungang grottos in Datong of Shan'xi province, Longmen grottos in Luoyang of Henan province and Maijishan grottos Mogao grottos is also called 'Qianfodong', lying in Dunhuang at the west end of 'Hexi corridor'; and Mogao grottos is famous for its colorful wall paintings, stored scriptures of buddhism and arts, and dedicated statues. In 1961, this grottos is included in the listings of national protection units. Mogao gottos is carved out of the eastern cliff of Mingsha Hills, which is 25 kilometers southwest to Dunhuang city. Mogao grottos is bult on the cliff with an eastern face to Taquanhe river, spanning 1680 meters from the north to the south and having a height of 50 meters. The work began in 16 kimdoms period of China history and the work last for around 900 years. Mogao grottos consists of 735 caves, 45,000 square meters of wall paintings and 2415 coloured statues.
