Potala Palace

Potala palace is now the symbolic construction of Tibet, and also the Lhasa city. Geographic location is at the almost centre of Tibet highland, to the northern side of Lhasa river, between Himalaya mountain range and the Nyianchentanghula mountains ,just by the Yalongzangbu river (the lingest ans biggest river in Tibet).

Potala was originally built on a hill during years from 633 to 640 A.D when the Tibet king Songzangganbo decided to marry his wife, a Tang dynasty princess. In those years, Tubo dynasty was rushing to its peak on power. When the palace was built, it ws said that there were 100 rooms (999 rooms + 1 medication cave). The potala palace has a hight over 117m, consists 2 parts - the red palace and the white palace. The red one was the place to keep the remains of the past succissive Dalhai Lhamas, and to hold religious parties, the white one was the political and life centre. The red one was built after the death of Fifth Dalhai Lhama in 1690.

In the middle 9th century, because of the internal political struggle for power and the slaves uprising, the powerful dynasty collapsed into pieces. Potala and Lhasa lost its position to be the Tibet capital until the Gelu pa order sprung to power, when the fifth Dalhai Lhama got the recoglition from Qing dynasty in politics, he rebuilt potala to be the centre of the whole Tibet. This situation lasted untill today.

After the gold stupa for 13th Dalhai Lhama was finished, the Potala palace took its present shape and size. From 1988 to 1992, the central government alloted US$68 millilion, the potala was completely relovated. In 1995, the Potala squre was built.
